The author received a PhD in physics from Uppsala University, Sweden, where he also became a tenured lecturer before being appointed full professor at Umea University.

During the past decade he has written a series of textbooks on computing. Most of them concern the fields of physics, which are governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). Details about the contents of these books are available at www.phys.umu.se/gunnar.
